The Boston Red Sox beat the New York Yankees 11-6 Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium to take sole possession of first place in the American League East.

But the Red Sox could be without the services of Dustin Pedroia for at least a month. The second baseman is returning to Boston Thursday to have his right knee examined, according to the Boston Globe.

Pedroia will have his knee scoped at Massachusetts General Hospital to determine the extent of the injury. If necessary, he could face surgery.

"It could keep me out a month," Pedroia said. "It's not what I want. But I have to get it checked out. It's been bothering me a lot."
